I buy my domain names from namecheap.com. As the name suggests, they're cheap. They're also easy to use and, unlike some other domain name registrars, you don't have to wade through tons of pages offering you other products before you can get to the checkout.
Namecheap offers free WhoisGuard Protection (keeps your contact details safe from prying eyes) for the first year of your domain purchase and the cheapest WhoisGuard Protection renewal rates that I've seen after that. Best of all, it's super-simple to change the nameservers when you want to assign your domain name to a website.
